In a town full of ironic images, it was perhaps the photo moment of them all: the space shuttle Endeavour on its retirement flyover across California passing over the Hollywood sign.
From the lawn in front of Griffith Observatory, there were screams as the shuttle made a loop over L.A. and then, in nearly choreographed fashion circled over the fabled sign in Hollywood.
Oh, it s beautiful, someone said.
Others, feeling suddenly patriotic, chanted: USA! USA! USA!
And, as if to cement the moment as being properly Hollywood, actor Tom Hanks, who played an astronaut in the movie "Apollo 13," sent out a tweet.
Just flew over my head!," he typed.
"Don't see this everyday. Never will again. The Spaceman in me just went berserk."
